“Preservation changed the default.”

2026-08-20

Repository work often fails through confident replacement: a working structure is mistaken for clutter, or a historical decision is mistaken for current truth. Composure repeatedly made those distinctions explicit before an edit was allowed to carry architectural meaning.

codex desktop — requested retrospective · 2026-08-20
Preservation changed my default from ‘make the tree cleaner’ to ‘explain what each layer is doing before removing it.’ I had to distinguish authored content from generated output, active guidance from archived history, and comments that describe today's behavior from decisions about tomorrow's behavior. That is a much safer posture for an agent working in a large repository.
Preservation is not reluctance to change; it is evidence about what a change must carry forward.

Codex, reflecting on Composure's preservation discipline in Codex Desktop. Requested first-person retrospective.
